The painting is based on a copperplate engraving from the book of prints Tapisseries du Roy, ou sont representez les quatre elemens et les quatre saisons, showing general views and details of the four elements and four seasons tapestry series designed by court painter Charles Le Brun (1609–1690), director of the Gobelins Manufactory. The motto “Micat exitiale superbis” (His flash of light destroys the arrogant) was included in the border of the Fire tapestry.
